……………................…………………………..The One that Got Away
Several months had now passed without myself done any fishing , this time also many manmade & natural factors (bad weather) seemed to be combined in working against my fishing & not having fished so long was showing its effect , I was beginning to change ! As I said in my earlier post "Fishing has become as necessary as breathing and without the passion of fishing I might slide quickly into age and disillusion " , I felt as if I was on the verge of dementia , sometimes I was even plagued by the nightmares of loosing all my fishing tackles to some burglar who opts for my lures instead of my Gold LOL
This time I decide to go some place new, called an old friend who stays there and all is set ! my journey begins at night , once out of the hustle and bustle of the city it was a very peaceful drive ,from inside our car the road seemed to move like a long serpent wrapped around the mountains , occasionally getting a glimpse of a hare , a raccoon or a frightened fox . All through the journey I tried my best to avoid crushing the serpents that cross the road in search of frogs , I saved 8 of them
I reached my destination just in time for breakfast and my friend's wife immediately offered hot water to bathe but I chose to freshen up quickly and sat for breakfast and then grabbed my rod and headed straight to the nearest fishing point , "your hot water for bath is getting cold Bhai sahab ( brother) " said my friend's wife "Bathing can wait but Fishing cannot " I declared as my friend laughed out loudly and followed me , he knew me better! how crazy I was about fishing
I carefully surveyed the area in a glance and decided where I want to throw my lures and started to walk towards one particular point of my interest and my local friend stopped me saying "you can't go any further its very dangerous there " I said I want to reach those rocks and cast out , to which he agreed reluctantly only after I agreed to come back after 10 casts !! I knew the tide was incoming and there was this small window of few minutes in which I have to cast and return back to safety and I choose a 2x3 feet of an uneven granite rock to stand on and cast , at the seventh cast I got a huge thumping knock on my rod and as I set the hook all hell broke loose !! But the reel was not singing this time !! it was Screaming hysterically !!!
my 7kg drag was immediately set to 9kg but that didn't make any difference at all ! I thought I had hooked on to a freight train , it seem to be moving on its own free will , not a speck of doubt in my mind that it was a big GT , I decided not to tighten the drag further and let it run as I also had other things to concentrate on ! My balance on this small slippery rock and when the run would stop ! I was able to recover only 20% of the line that was taken out and then again the run would resume ! With each run the giant was going further and further in deep waters , every muscle in my body was active in holding the rod up and maintaining my balance on the slippery rock that I was standing on . It was like a tug of war and he was a seasoned player , more than 180mtrs of line was out of my reel , first it was blindly running towards the deep sea and now he started to change his direction and head to its right where there were a few rocks jutting out of the water , I tried in vain to stop it but couldn't !!! And what happened next was inevitable !! my line was cut above the 14feet leader ! The fight lasted a total of 8 and half minutes
and it can be said to be one of the best fight of my angling days ! at last I had good action on my RAD oops Rod fish or no fish ! I am a happy man That feeling of loosing a great catch after a good fight can plunge any angler into melancholy and despair, but not my Lionhearted self!! infact I was happy that I lost this battle with a giant who deserved all the respect for its cleverness and presence of mind , those years of experience in evading the nets and tackling the hooked lines certainly commanded Respect !! At least I can say that I had a great fishy fight the entire episode was watched by a villager from the top of a nearby hill and he came down running , huffing n puffing he declared that it was a " Ghoda Kokar " meaning= Horse trevally that’s what the villagers call a giant trevally , and from the description of the eyewitness the fish was estimated to be above 25kg , I was badly wanting some action on my rod and I finally had one!
The evening session drew a blank, back at his house my friend was constantly repeating Ohh S*#@ !! Ohh F@#&*!! we lost a very big fish today !! He relaxed only when I told him " Never let Success get into your Head & Never let your Failures get into your Heart " then after a hot bath , that night I slept like a child satiated and tranquil !
Day 2 my good morning fishing was disturbed by several locals who wanted to see this city man catching big fish on a thin sewing thread (braid ) the word was out about yesterday's lost Giant now they were amazed by this sport called Angling , sadly relentless casting for hours produced no results either in the morning nor evening and a villager jokingly declared " Tumhi tyanchi aishi la nath takli mhanun te sagle gharbrun plale " (meaning = you had put a nose ring on their big mama so they all left the place frightened ) I couldn't help laughing out loudly , one villager offered to take me in his boat and go in deeper waters to catch big fish to which I politely refused as there was not much fun in keeping the drag full tight and just hauling the fish up in the boat ! I would rather stand on the rocks and play and guide the fish towards land , in this way the fish has more than 60% chance of beating you in the game and that’s where the Excitement, Talent and the Fun part is and I also don't want to educate the villagers, the secrets of angling , as some of them also happen to be fishermen this will certainly spell the doom for future angling in that area
First I was dead serious
After a few lungfuls of fresh salty air , my Mood begins to change
Ha Ha I am Fishing and you are not !!
(3feet long snake skin) last night as the Lion slept peacefully in his den one 3 feet long beauty undressed and was dancing in the Mango garden & she is still running around naked got to find and poke her with my popping rod
Ahaa !! my private little Beach !! no one will disturb my fishy sleep
No !! I am not Fishing ! please go away ! Shoo !!
Oops !!
Okay ! Okay ! you caught me with my rod UP ! but don't tell anybody I'll give you a fish
Here take this Bream and keep quite
A live Starfish kept upside down on a rock
given below is the link of the Video of the leg movements of this fish
The Video link below shows the same Starfish moving in its natural habitat

before landing it the sharks attacked my Cuttlefish and bit chunks out of it
Day 3 was my last day of fishing & that too was only to be done for 1st half of the day as I would rest in the evening and leave for Mumbai by nightfall , so this time I went to another place some 70kms far hoping to hook something and again I hooked a mini monster 15+kg GT and this time I brought it under control from far out and when it was just 15feet from me it dived head down and thrashed its tail on the water and in that process my 120lbs leader was sliced 1meter above the lure !! Another good fish lost now I tried Beach fishing and was rewarded with a good size Bream and more than 3.5kg Cuttle fish with tiger like stripes and the fun part is when the cuttle fish was still very far in the water and the sharks attacked it and bit chunks out of it I had to quickly get it out of the water
My First big CuttleFish above the 3.5kg mark
Last few months many of my anglers friends were poking me as to when will my next post come ? Now I hope you all enjoyed reading and I know some of you must have even tried to imagine the thrilling power of a 25kg monster on the rod
Take Care, Good Bye, till you see me here again or on some rock Casting my Heart out
